Elvira Tortora: The Bookmaker’s Daughter
October 14, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
$20Elvira Tortora makes her highly anticipated solo debut with The Bookmaker’s Daughter, the story of her childhood as the daughter of a bookie living and raising a family in Brooklyn. Tortora tells her story through the songs of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Frank Loesser, Stephen Sondheim, and more songs spanning the 1960s through 2001. Featuring musical director Gregory Toroian, the show is directed by Lina Koutrakos.
In July 2022, Tortora performed one song from this work in progress at Don’t Tell Mama in a group show directed by Koutrakos, with musical director Toroian on piano. Writing about the show for BroadwayWorld, Stephen Mosher noted, “The artist whose next solo show I will catch, at all costs, was Elvira Tortora… Tortora was completely connected to everything around her. The lyrics, the audience, the piano, the pianist, the melody – nothing was left in the air.”
