DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Roderick and Music Director Andy Lantz for “Sunday with the Songbook“. They will be reviving songs from The Great American Songbook and the Golden Age of American music\, featuring the music of Frank Sinatra\, Tony Bennett\, Sammy Davis Jr and more. Join us for a fun\, nostalgic afternoon as we look back at this period of timeless American music. \nMark Roderick has been a regular open mic singer at the Napoleon Room since 2019. He quickly became an audience favorite and has performed songs from all musical genres including selections from Broadway\, the American Songbook\, Pop and Jazz. In May 2022\, after the 2-year Covid shutdown\, he headlined\, along with his good buddy Leni Lunderman\, “It Takes Two”\, featuring classic male duets. \nMark was a long-time member of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus and was the music director of the Metropolitan Community Church of Boston. He is currently a member of the Southern Mass Festival Chorus and has been a featured soloist since 2008. He was also a Josephine’s Cabaret Spotlight Singer a number of times\, most recently at this year’s Rainbow and Stars Pride Series in June. DESCRIPTION:Gabriela and Phil Kassel enjoy singing together at Club Café when she is visiting from Montreal\, but they last did a whole show nearly 20 years ago when she was in high school. They decided that’s too long\, geography be damned! Between songs\, they’ll tell stories about how their musical paths crossed at different phases of life and give a glimpse of their frank familial rapport\, singing old and new favorite tunes\, including those of Amy Winehouse; Joy of Cooking; Laura Nyro\, Bonnie Raitt\, Sheryl Crow\, Leonard Cohen\, and others. Their friend and long-time collaborator\, Michael Larson\, is the show’s Musical Director and he’ll join them on piano. \nPhil and Gabriela have busy day jobs as a local public interest lawyer and somatic therapist and facilitator. By all accounts\, their voices work well together. Here are excerpts from a review of a show they did in 2007: “Bringing down the house was left to the dynamic father-daughter act of Gabriela and Phil Kassel. The duo’s sweet harmonies play off the songs\, with Dad” nailing a “dark sardonic vocal pitch” and lightening to “a soaring tenor to accompany his daughter\,” who has “a dreamy\, fluid voice which allows the music to spill out like water bouncing and skipping across stones – and the lyrics to fall effortlessly across the notes.
