SUMMARY:Refuge in Release
DESCRIPTION:REFUGE IN RELEASE \nVocalists Hayley Thompson-King and Cassie Kollman present a night of cabaret featuring their unique twists on music by Kurt Weill\, Frank Loesser\, Burt Bacharach\, Duke Ellington\, and more. Thompson-King and Kollman along with their collaborative pianist JJ Thomchick opine and improvise on love\, lust\, marriage\, refuge\, and relations. \nHAYLEY THOMPSON-KING – “A voice that could do anything doing just what it wants.” declares Americana UK. Hayley Thompson-King’s diverse career has encompassed opera\, rock\, and theatre performance\, songwriting\, recording\, touring\, stage directing\, and teaching. Her expressivity in both singing and songwriting have been recognized as “jaw-dropping exposition that celebrates the entire cannon of rock and roll’s energy” (Paste Magazine) and “an explosive display of vocal prowess” (PopMatters). Hayley’s 2020 album Sororicide was produced by Sean Slade (Radiohead\, Hole\, Lou Reed). With Slade’s mentorship and direction\, Sororicide accommodates garage rock and Americana while also weaving a thread back to composers from the classical realm who have influenced her work. In its review of the album\, Newsweek observes\, “in the vein of alt-classical song cycles and rock concept albums\, her new work layers wide-reaching sonics with palpable psychodrama. At its core is the battle between an artist and the voice inside her head.” In her most recent project\, Hayley returns to the stage presenting a cabaret piece entitled She Contains Multitudes. Inspired by America’s former role as a place for minds and bodies to find shelter\, she explores the theme of refuge through original arrangements and improvisations on the music of Kurt Weill\, John Cage\, and Peter Gabriel\, as well as her original music. \nCASSIE KOLLMAN is a contemporary vocalist\, songwriter\, and bandleader who possesses an informed command of her craft and performs a wide range of musical genres\, mostly those rooted in Black American traditions; including jazz\, r&b\, blues\, indie\, pop\, and rock. Her specialization is vocal improvisation. Cassie released her debut album\, Lady in Shoes\, in 2021; an eclectic mix of groove-based\, richly-textured\, and imaginative original compositions and collaborations. Cassie’s songwriting is introspective\, personal\, and emotionally nuanced. An agile vocalist and deep listener\, Cassie creates compositions and arrangements that are vocally ambitious\, harmonically intricate\, and lyrically exploratory. The result is a soulful experience of jazz-pop music. Cassie performs regularly as a soloist\, and manages several ensembles in the Boston area. As a cross-genre vocalist\, Cassie’s projects span a diverse range of instrumentation and styles\, sharing the common languages of improvisation and blues. Produced by Brian Charles (Moby\, Dispatch\, Weakened Friends)\, Cassie will release her second full-length album in 2025.

Join us for MAC’s VIRTUAL Open Mic on zoom  – Tuesday July 15 @ 7pm. \n\nEmail us at: CabaretMACnyc@gmail.com to RSVP and get the zoom link. \n\nYou may either accompany yourself on your own musical instrument\, or sing along to your pre-recorded music track of your choice.\n\nIf singing to a track\, it works best if you have two devices – a laptop or tablet to connect to the zoom\, and a separate device such as your cell phone that has your music track on it so you can play the track and sing along to it that night. (We find having the separate device to play the track works best — if you try to play the track on the same device you use to connect to the zoom\, the audio and video don’t always sync up correctly.)\n\n\nHope you can join us!

SUMMARY:Miss Otis Regrets
DESCRIPTION:“Miss Otis Regrets” is a genre-defying solo cabaret show that blends vintage radio drama\, queer coming-of-age memoir\, American socio-political history\, and classic cabaret with sardonic wit and pathos. Framed by the haunting lyrics of Cole Porter’s “Miss Otis Regrets\,” the show begins as a fictionalized 1950s radio broadcast detailing the life of Carl Otis\, a sensitive young man navigating the dangers of queer desire in mid-century America. As Carl’s story unfolds—culminating in his exposure\, public shame\, and isolation—the narrative seamlessly shifts to the autobiographical journey of performer Francis Garner. \n  \nWith musical interludes ranging from Arthur Schwartz to Sara Bareilles to M.C. Hammer\, Francis parallels Carl’s repression and marginalization with his own queer youth in the 1990s and 2000s\, tracing a path from closeted adolescent opera prodigy to disillusioned adult seeking authenticity. Wry commercial parodies and historical references (Eisenhower’s Executive Order 10450\, “Don’t Ask\, Don’t Tell\,” the AIDS crisis) lend political and cultural context\, while candid monologues and powerful musical numbers bring emotional immediacy. The show culminates in a celebration of self-acceptance and resilience\, underscored by a defiantly hopeful rendition of “Defying Gravity.”

SUMMARY:Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano in Hirschfeld’s Broadway: Songs and Stories
DESCRIPTION:HAMPTONS SUMMER SONGBOOK BY THE SEA presents ERIC COMSTOCK and BARBARA FASANO in HIRSCHFELD’S BROADWAY\, Saturday\, July 26\, 7:30 PM\, hosted by DAVID LEOPOLD.\n\nAl Hirschfeld has been synonymous with Broadway since his first theatre drawing appeared in 1926. For 76 years\, his work was as much a part of a Broadway show as its opening night. David Leopold\, creative director of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation\, teams up with cabaret stars Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano (“cabaret caviar” – The New York Times / “expert musicianship and joie de vivre in equal measure” – The New Yorker) for a unique evening of songs and stories that highlight Hirschfeld’s contribution to the American Theatre. See nine decades on Broadway including Oklahoma!\, West Side Story\, Hello Dolly!\, Fiddler on the Roof\, Funny Girl\, Sweeney Todd\, and Chicago through the eyes and the pen of “The Line King.” You will also learn how and why Hirschfeld began to hide his daughter’s name\, NINA\, in all his drawings\, and the “national insanity” that ensued. Comstock and Fasano’s musical performance combined with Leopold’s stories will make the Golden Age of Broadway come alive with a hip\, modern sensibility.\n\nERIC COMSTOCK and BARBARA FASANO\n\n\nHIRSCHFELD’S BROADWAY: Songs and Stories\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSATURDAY\, JULY 26\, 7:30 PM\n \nLTV Studios East Hampton\n75 Industrial Road\nWainscott\, NY 11975\nTickets: 631-315-8818 / https://bit.ly/45kDPx1\nGeneral admission (in advance) – $60\, General admission (at the door) – $65\nVIP Café front row reserve seating (with drink ticket) – $100\n \nThe 2025 season of HAMPTONS SUMMER SONGBOOK BY THE SEA opened with the Marvelous MARILYN MAYE\, followed by shows starring LEE ROY REAMS and LIZ CALLAWAY. SUMMARY:Ashley Wool in The Broadway Era
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes you have to break your own rules to find your true voice–and change the game forever. \nIn her one-of-a-kind cabaret coming to the Laurie Beechman Theatre on July 28\, The Broadway Era\, Ashley Wool shares humorous and heartfelt stories from her unconventional journey to Broadway as one of the original cast members of How to Dance in Ohio\, a joyful and groundbreaking musical that marked a watershed moment for neurodiverse representation in the media. \nIn 2008\, Ashley Wool received the gift of a lifetime that she absolutely did not want: an autism diagnosis. \nDeep in denial and horrified of what the label of “autistic” would mean for her chances at an acting career–or any career\, for that matter–she decided she could never talk about it publicly if she wanted to make it in showbiz. \nBut when the pandemic hit—and suddenly there was no showbiz—she began exploring and sharing the pieces of her identity that she had refused to acknowledge\, and realized she had a lot more to say. After penning a viral op-ed on autistic representation in a certain film\, she quickly became one of the most highly sought-after voices for autistic self-advocacy in the entertainment industry. \nTurns out\, there were even bigger plans in store for her artistry and her advocacy once showbiz returned–and what happened next would make her fall deeper in love with musical theatre and the Broadway community than she ever dreamed possible. \nDirected by Joe Langworth with musical direction by David John Madore\, The Broadway Era is a musical celebration of the connections\, communities\, and changes that become possible when we find the courage to live authentically.

SUMMARY:MAC Virtual Open Mic on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Sing with us from your own home! Join us for MAC’s VIRTUAL Open Mic on zoom  – Thursday August 14 @ 7pm.
