SUMMARY:Vicki Burns Sings at Mezzrow!
DESCRIPTION:Join me and my wonderful trio of Art Hirahara on piano and Sam Bevan on bass and arrangements for an evening at Mezzrow in Greenwich Village\, one of the hippest most intimate places to hear jazz and selections from the Great American Songbook! We will be performing music from my new\, critically acclaimed album\, Lotus Blossom Days featuring music from Billy Strayhorn and Roger Schore as well as Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer and some original music as well. LBD has received wonderful reviews and airplay on radio stations around the world. \nHere’s what the critics are saying: \n“Lotus Blossom Days” was released in July 2022 and is still receiving wonderful reviews including this one\, just received a couple of weeks ago: \n\n“Lotus Blossom Days holds one’s interest throughout. It is easily recommended as one of the better jazz vocal albums of recent years. Vicki Burns’ performances showcase an adventurous spirit and a flexible voice with a wide range that is attractive in all of its registers.” Scott Yanow\, Downbeat\, Jazz Times and The New York City Jazz Record\n\n\nhttp://www.nycjazzrecord.com/…\n\nAnd here are some more wonderful reviews:\n\nPop Culture Classics by Paul Freeman\n\n“Happy days are here again for jazz aficionados\, thanks to “Lotus Blossom Days\,” the warm and winning new album by Vicki Burns. Her vocals\, subtle\, sophisticated and appealing\, achieve a rare level of intimacy and relatability. Her tone is engaging; her phrasing inventive\, yet natural. With the first notes she sings\, Burns will have you hooked and when you’ve reached the end of these delicious dozen tunes\, you’ll still be craving more.”\n\nhttp://popcultureclassics.com/deja_202209.html#burns\nI have also recently been reviewed in JazzTimes magazine: \nJazzTimes by Andrew Gilbert \n“A consistently interesting program delivered with rhythmic acuity and abundant imagination… it’s her hat tips to fellow singers—like Tessa Souter’s alluring “You Don’t Have to Believe” and Carol Sloane and Roger Schore’s lyrics for Billy Strayhorn’s exquisite title track—that shine brightest. Burns’ work stands on its own\, but she’s keeping some fine company.”\nhttps://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/vicki-burns-lotus-blossom-days-vibu-jazz/\n

SUMMARY:Mary Foster Conklin - CD Release Event at the Soapbox Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Mary Foster Conklin returns to the Soapbox Gallery to celebrate the release of her fifth recording THESE PRECIOUS DAYS (MockTurtle Music). The arrangements are by pianist John diMartino and the band includes Sara Caswell on violin\, Ed Howard on bass\, Vince Cherico on drums and Guilherme Monteiro on guitar. Just before the shutdown in 2020 they worked together on a unique catalogue of Leiber and Stoller art songs. As the world evolves into a new chapter where nothing is as it was\, she explores what’s ahead with songs by Melba Liston\, Leonard Cohen\, Fran Landesman\, Andre & Dory Previn and more. A master storyteller\, Conklin is an old school song hound with a talent for uncovering offbeat material and hosts a weekly radio show called “A Broad Spectrum – the Ladies of Jazz” celebrating women composers and lyricists on WFDU.FM on the HD2 channel.
